    HELPING ORGANIZATIONS DEVELOP

    Organizations across the world are facing unparalleled, ever more complex challenges that are extremely difficult to master because of incomplete information, contradictory requirements and rapidly changing circumstances. In my view, the only sustainably way to address these challenges is through significantly better leadership, more robust relationships and deeper engagement within organizations.

    We sometimes forget that organizations are not machines that we can control at will, but complex and fluid interaction processes between people. Over time these countless interactions create behavioural patterns. Managers are in charge of their operations, but they are not in control of these patterns. If they want to nudge these patterns towards making their organizations better they need to have the ability to see what is not there but should be, enable others to see it as well, and to facilitate courageous joint action to help make it happen.

    I am passionate about enabling managers and leadership teams to develop new insights, strengthen positive behaviors and experiment with new ones in order to further their own aspirations and those of their organization.

    HELPING MANAGERS LEAD BETTER

    When Aristotle said "We are what we repeatedly do“ he reminded us that how we are and what impact we have in the world is only partly determined by what we think about ourselves, but largely by what we do… repeatedly. That means, to have the impact managers want to have they need to be present, focused and connected.

    I therefore help my clients to further develop both their presence and impact and at the same time support them in understanding their “shadow side", their unconscious drivers, beliefs, assumptions and emotional and behavioural patterns that can get in the way of having the kind of presence and impact they would like and need to have.

    Leadership Mastery

    I work as executive coach and sparring partner to CEOs, senior managers and/or their leadership teams to support them in dealing with difficult organizational change issues, improve the quality of their individual and/or collective leadership practices and increase their personal and/or collective impact.

    Team Performance

    I design and facilitate highly challenging and impactful workshops and other interventions (e.g. learning journeys, action learning groups) that enable business and functional leadership teams to increase their strategic clarity, their ability to think and perform together, their personal commitment and role modelling, and their ability to mobilize others.

    People Engagement

    I design and facilitate (often together with other senior consultants from my worldwide partner network) powerful large-scale organizational change and culture development processes that help organizations to increase their degree of engagement, agility and innovation in order to achieve their desired business aspiration and organizational objectives.

    FOCUSING ON CONCRETE IMPROVEMENT

    I am an educator, sociologist, leadership consultant and executive coach. I support CEOs, senior managers and their teams from across a multitude of industries, both in the private and public sector, to improve the quality of leadership and engagement within their –mostly global– organizations. My clients say that I am very relational, challenging, risk-taking, practice-focused and theory-based, international, and highly experienced and competent.

    Prior to starting The Leadership Practice, I was on the leadership team of the consulting unit of Ashridge Business School, Partner at Oliver Wyman responsible for the Executive Development practice in Europe, Managing Director of Insight Consulting, Corporate Director of Leadership & Organization Development at Zurich Insurance Group, Director of Management Development at Dow Chemical Europe, Employee Development & Quality Performance Manager at Dow Chemical UK & Eire, and Training Manager & HR Business Partner at Dow Chemical Stade.

    I have taught mindfulness and leadership at Saïd Business School – University of Oxford, organization change on the Ashridge Masters in Organization Change, and leadership at Management Centre Europe, EFMD and IMD.

    I hold a Master in Education from the University of Hamburg, a Master in Organizational Consulting from Ashridge Business School, and a Doctorate in Organizational Change from Middlesex University. I am trained in Systemic Consulting and have professional diplomas in Body-centered Awareness and in Executive Coaching. In addition, I have studied martial arts, meditation and improvisation theatre.

    CREATING ENABLING CONDITIONS

    In order to help create conditions under which people motivate themselves to do what needs doing I am guided and inspired by a set of explicit, but hopefully lightly held, theories and assumptions.

    • I believe that if we look at an organization and its people in an appreciative way and identify the positive aspects that are already there we will create a more positively energizing environment and future.

    • A key element of starting my work well is to ask “whose needs is this serving?” And a key element of continuing well is to engage and involve those whose needs are being served. Therefore, right from the start, I seek to understand from potential clients how any possible intervention needs to look, for it to be relevant and for them to be engaged.

    • In my view, both individuals and groups need enabling processes which allow them to change and develop by building on what they already know and what works well, and to improve or eliminate what does not.

    • I find that an appropriate way to show respect for my clients and to ensure relevance to them is to involve them directly in the design of any intervention. I see the design process as a dialogue that brings together the interested parties in the spirit of co-creation.

    • My intention is to always make the experience of any intervention congruent with its desired outcomes.

    • Developing new patterns of thinking, understanding, feeling, and acting means leaving familiar ways behind in order to discover and develop new ways of being. This inevitably involves a certain amount of mental, emotional and psychological stretch. I take great care that this necessary stretch does not turn into unhelpful strain or stress.
